OFF CAMPUS BUDGETING AND COST BREAKDOWN

We have taken the guessing game out of campus living. Below, we have broken down typical expenses that allow you to anticipate your costs while renting off campus.

  • RENT – Rent will vary based on the house you choose and the number of roommates you have. However, next to food, your rent will most likely be your biggest expense per month.

  • FOOD – Food, depending on your dining habits, should range approximately $150 to $300/month. Our recommend budgeting is between $250 and $350 per person per month.

  • UTILITIES – Most rentals, if not all, will require the tenant to have the responsibility to place the utilities of gas, electric and cable in their names. Cost will depend of course, on the usage, therefore, making it difficult to give a specific number. However, we’ve taken a poll from our existing tenants to help give you an estimate.

  • GAS – Gas is directly related to heating and again will vary greatly depending on usage. Our heating systems are serviced throughout the year to maintain optimal performance which helpsĀ to keep costs down. Northeastern Ohio is known for its brutal winters and heating is essential in keeping us warm. Depending on the weather, our heating systems generally are turned on in late October, and will run sometimes into mid-April. Usage during these months will vary, depending on the weather. Expect that usage and cost will be higher in the months of December through March, followed by much lower cost the rest of the year. For example, in the month of January it would be typical to have a heating bill of around $250.00 and in July to have a bill for less than $20.00. For a group of four, splitting the bills, we would suggest that total heating bills for the year would be approximately $1,165.00/year. Our recommendation, based on a group of four, is to budget $25 per person per month.

  • ELECTRICITY – Like gas, the cost of electricity is directly related to usage. However, our existing tenants have again been polled with a result that the average electric bill is approximately $55.00/month. For the year, that would average to around $660. Our recommendation, based on a group of four, is to budget $14/person per month.

  • CABLE -The cost of cable all depends on which package you decide to purchase. The cable company provides different packages at different price ranges. You can get a basic cable package for around $55.00/month or a package with additional channels that can go as high as $100.00/month or higher. Our recommendation is to plan for a cost of $65.00/month. Divided by a group of four would be a budget of $16/person per month.

* THE ABOVE FIGURES ARE BASED ON ESTIMATED COSTS AND ARE NOT TO BE USED AS EXACT NUMBERS FOR YOUR BUDGET. ALL COSTS INCURRED WILL BE AFFECTED BY AMOUNT OF USAGE, PACKAGES CHOSEN AND NUMBER OF ROOMATES. ABOVE BUDGET ESTIMATES ARE BASED ON AN OCCUPANCY OF FOUR.
